Like the other vendors are, RIM periodically release updates to the operating system and applications  for BlackBerry smartphone. It was intended to fix the bugs or error on operating system and applications or simply to improve its performance. This time we provide tips how to updates BlackBerry operating system and applications.

To update the operating system on the BlackBerry smartphone, there are two ways to choose from. First, using computer (PC) assistance, or using Over The Air (OTA) method.

For the first method, using computer (PC) assistance, there are several steps that must be done if you want to use this method:

1. Back Up
Although backups are included in one of the processes that run while upgrading, but we strongly recommend that you back up data from your BlackBerry using the Device Manager before upgrading. Better worry than sorry, right? The following steps are:
  • Connect your BlackBerry to the computer using a USB cable, then run Device Manager and click the 'Back Up Now'
  • choose 'Full' in the 'Backup Type'
  • Wait until the backup process is complete
2. Download
The next thing you should do, download the BlackBerry Device Software OS installation file. We recommend using a computer with stable internet connection to minimize the risk of failure.
  • Through a PC browser, go to download site address then click on the name of the service/operator which is used for your BlackBerry.
  • Select your BlackBerry type from the "Please Select A Product" and then click 'next'
  • Click download on the latest BlackBerry OS part (usually located at the top)
  • Fill your data on the form, select 'yes' after the statement "I Confirm the information set out above is accurate and current"
  • On the next screen select 'agree' and click 'next'
  • Click 'download' and wait until the download file is complete and ready for upgrading.
  • Besides BlackBerry Device Software (BB OS), you certainly need the BlackBerry Device Manager that you can install from the installation CD (included in sales package) or you can download it.
3. Upgrade
  • Run your downloaded BlackBerry Device Software files to install
  • Follow the instructions until the installation is complete. And you do not need to run Device Manager because the upgrading process doesn't use this software. Then click 'Finish'
  • Run "loader.exe" that can be found in your directory "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader\Loader.exe".
  • Follow the instructions, continue the process by clicking 'next' on every window that appears.
  • In the window that displays "Device Application Selection", you can select an application and the language you want to install into your BlackBerry, then click 'next'
  • In the next window you are given the option to backup data. Backup the data on this process different from that previously described (in Step 1. Back up), because the system will automatically restore your data after the upgrade process is complete. Select "Automatically back up the device application data". Click 'next'
  • Click on Finish
  • The system will run the upgrade process, remember not to unplug the data cable from the computer or a BlackBerry before the upgrade process is complete. Wait until all the process is complete and the window pops 'The loading operation was succesfull'
If you having problem because your service/operator are not in the list, or because you using a Black Market BlackBerry, you can see the tips here.
